Shooting the OB Pier… POV style of course! (Via hostevie.com)

I’ve wanted to make this video for a while now.
Last year was the first time I’ve ever shot a pier (if you’re new, “shooting” a pier means you surf under/through it), and it was a big adrenaline rush!
It’s honestly not a very difficult thing to do, but there can be heavy consequences if you mess up. The pilings are made of concrete, which hurts, but the barnacles on the pilings will add to the destruction if you fall.
So Ian and I started the new year right, and headed to the Ocean Beach pier in San Diego. I love competitions, so we decided to see who could shoot the pier the most times.
I might have had an unfair advantage, with my 40 liters of volume on the Couch Potato, and Ian only had his shortboard. Either way, I think I made it through the pier 7 times, and Ian only got 3.
What pier should we shoot next?

  • Couldn’t be more proud of a project. I had the pleasure of working with Dillon Perillo and Brendon Gibbens on our short film “The Dill & Beeg Project”. We travelled to more than 6 countries in 10 months and scored some incredible waves. I hope you enjoy this movie as much as i enjoyed filming it.

ROB MACHADO FINDS THE TREE OF LIFE IN POST-TSUNAMI SENDAI (via blog.gessato)

ROB MACHADO FINDS THE TREE OF LIFE IN POST-TSUNAMI SENDAI

Posted by  on Sep 5, 2013 in VIDEO
Iconic surfer Rob Machado has traveled the world for more than half his life. And during that time, he’s crossed paths with countless individuals who share a love for surfing and a passion for the arts. In his new series called Through The Lens, we meet these individuals and follow Rob as he connects with the people who’ve inspired him along the way.
In his second Through the Lens episode, Rob visits Sendai, Japan, one of the hardest places hit by the 2011 earthquake/tsunami. He meets artist/surfer Takashi Kobayashi, who shows him the area’s surrounding waves and a tree-house project particularly close to his heart. The results, as you’ll see in this short film directed by Tyler Manson, are nothing short of inspiring.
To support tsunami relief efforts and Takashi Kobayashi’s incredible work, Hurley has created the Through The Lens Tee, featuring photography by Rob Machado. The tee is available exclusively online at and 100 percent of proceeds go to Treehouse Creations Co LTD to build more tree-houses in tsunami-affected areas.

Stephen Anderson wrote the music score that was used in this video. You can download the song on iTunes in the link below.

The song from this video is called "Count Your Blessings", it's from a old Christian hymn that Stephen did his own rendition of.

The main surfer in the video is Andy Pierce. Evan Fa is one of the body boarders in the video as well.

On a technical note:
The entire video was shot on a Canon 7D, all in 720P, at 60fps (frames per second).

I used a couple different Canon lenses to shoot this, they were...
Canon 70-200 F/2.8
Canon 100-400 F/4/5.6
Canon 2X III Extender (this makes the lens when it is at 400mm, become 800 mm's. It does loose some quality, but it's not very noticeable.)

The entire video was shot all on the North Shore, at Pipeline, and Waimea for the big waves.

To get the "super slow motion", after I filmed at 60fps, I through it into the program "After Effects". I used an effect that comes with the program called "Time Warp". This allowed me to make the 60fps, to 1000fps. The way this works is the computer processes/adds frames in between the frames that are already in existence. It took several days for the computer to process the clips into the super slow motion that appears as well, so it does take a lot out of the computer, as far as processing goes.

Another similar program that does something similar to this slow motion effect, is a program called "Twixtor". It's another great program that is very similar, however you have to buy it as a separate plugin, and it is a little expensive, but if you do a lot of slow motion, it's totally worth it :)
